By Becca is the design studio of Becca Herman (me!), a self taught designer and graphic artist. I come from a family of artists and musicians and so grew up enmeshed in all things artistic. My dad is an amazing photographer and left to his own devices would have pursued a career in cinematography. My uncle is an artist — I can clearly remember visiting my uncle’s art studio as a child and being permitted to sit at his drafting table and use his markers and pastels. It seems he had them in every color under the sun! As a child I apparently showed some aptitude for art as well. I was invited to participate in an advanced art group in my elementary school and had several drawings published in the local papers. However, art was not a passion for me. I was never satisfied with my work and found it more frustrating than enjoyable.
All of that changed when I discovered the world of Photoshop and digital art in 2006.
My family was growing and so was my collection of digital photographs. I was a member of several expecting and parenting message boards and I started turning my photos into message board signatures. These became increasingly more complex at a rapid pace and very soon I found myself making them for others so I could work with MORE photographs and make MORE designs. The natural progression from there was into print work. I made a few Christmas cards at first, and then one year as I was casting about for Christmas gifts I decided to try making a calendar. That was all it took to get me hooked on digital scrapbooking for good! I’ve made a calendar every year since and a few hundred layouts as well and treasure them dearly.
The trouble I had was in finding exactly the right papers and embellishments to use on my pages. They weren’t the right colors, or they were too cute, or for some other reason, they were just not quite what I was looking for. So with the encouragement of a designer friend, I tried a designing challenge. That first challenge immediately blossomed into a love of all things design. Finally my inner artist had found a medium in which I could create something that I loved. No more frustration over the pen or brush failing to capture the picture in my mind’s eye. Through digital design I am able to change something over and over until I get it exactly right. I can adjust the color or the curve of a line until it pleases me. What luxury!
I started selling my designs in August of 2009 and with each new kit I have refined my craft. I am constantly seeking to master new techniques, to be able create something that I couldn’t before. I am always designing, even when I’m not. I see color palettes in the word around me, my daughter’s outfits, a field of flowers. I study the way that shadows fall outside my window and the way the light hits the basket of apples on my kitchen table. I am forever inspired by color, by mood, by whatever strikes a perfect chord in my soul. I create what I love and then I hope that others love it, too. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing the pages and projects that other people have created with my designs. I am amazed every day that people like my work and I am so blessed to be able to pursue something I love and that brings me such joy.
